Hi All-
This is my first post on this forum. I grew up paddling all over VT NH and ME. Usually spent most summers minus shirt and shoes. Fell out of it for a long time until I got a canoe about 3 years ago. Anyway, my wife has fallen in love with it and wants to camp out of it. Growing up (12 or 13yo), I did a 3 night trip on the Saco, out of a summer camp in Raymond. It was not the Fryeburg beer party, but more of a back woods feel. There was still a lot of sandy beach and some out houses, that we used for camping. I do not remember where we put in, but would like to plan a trip for my wife, our 2 adult kids, and maybe a couple of other families. Any pointers on a good area for this type of trip, or any ideas on where we may have put in 25 years ago would be appreciated! Thanks – Ben

Hi Ben,
I don’t know the Saco too well, but there are plenty of rivers for overnight canoe trips. If you don’t have it already, I recommend getting the AMC canoe guide to Maine rivers (and NH/VT). That plus the Gazetteer should give you a good foundation for ideas.
A lot of the rivers get dry by July (especially this year), but you can find lake and river camping all summer, depending how far you want to drive. If you’ll go to the other side of Maine, the Machias and Penobscot have some great camping. You may have trouble squeezing 8 people into some sites though.
